Short answer: a reefer container is a walk-in cooler, just one that arrives finished. A built walk-in cooler is a cold room constructed inside or next to your building; a reefer container is a portable refrigerated unit from 10' to 53' that you plug in and load. If you need cold space in weeks rather than months, may move or grow, or prefer to rent, a reefer container is usually the better walk-in. If you need more than about 30 pallets in one open room, look at a modular walk-in such as ZSTORE XL.
This guide compares the three options side by side, so you can pick the right one for your product, your site and your timeline.
What is a walk-in cooler?
A walk-in cooler is a refrigerated room you can walk into, used to keep perishables such as produce, dairy, meat, flowers, prepared meals or pharmaceuticals at a controlled temperature, usually between 33°F and 41°F. Run colder, the same kind of room becomes a walk-in freezer.
Traditionally, a walk-in is built: panels, a refrigeration system and often a slab or foundation, installed by a contractor inside your facility or next to it. That works well for a permanent need, but it means months of construction, excavation and foundations, and permits. The room stays where it was built.

What is a reefer container?
A reefer container (refrigerated container) is a portable unit with its own built-in refrigeration that holds any temperature from -40°F to +104°F (-40°C to +40°C). ZGROUP units come in four lengths, with Thermo King refrigeration, a food-grade non-slip floor, interior LED lighting and high-insulation doors. It works as a standalone cold room: plug it in and it is running fast, with no construction and only limited permitting.
Because one unit covers the whole range from deep freeze to warm, the same reefer container can serve as a walk-in cooler today and a walk-in freezer next season.

When a reefer container is the better walk-in cooler
- You need cold space fast. A reefer container can be running in weeks, instead of months for a built cold room.
- Your need is seasonal or uncertain. Rentals start at 30 days and seasonal contracts run 3 to 12 months, so you are not paying year-round for a harvest or a peak season.
- You may move. A leased building, a temporary site or a growing operation is a poor place for a permanent room. A reefer moves with you.
- You need special conditions. A reefer can be fitted with a humidifier, for example to keep humidity-sensitive products such as gummies at the right moisture level.
- You have limited power. The standard is 440–480V three-phase, and an optional 220V single-phase converter kit lets a refrigerated container run where there is no three-phase service.
When you outgrow one container: ZSTORE XL
A single reefer tops out at 30 pallets in a 53' unit. Several reefers side by side solve capacity, but you get a row of narrow boxes and one refrigeration unit to watch per box. ZSTORE XL joins 40' modules side by side and removes the inner walls, so the modules form one open walk-in room. Each module adds 320 ft² and about 20 pallet positions: a 2XL is 640 ft², a 6XL is 1,920 ft², and there is no upper limit.
Two advantages matter for a walk-in cooler you depend on every day. First, real picking space: one open, continuous floor. Second, built-in redundancy: every module has its own Thermo King unit, so if one stops, the others keep the room cold. Modules share one open space with no inner walls, so you also get more usable floor and less energy per square foot than with single containers.
Power, permits and placement
Power. Plan for 440–480V three-phase. If your site only has 220V three-phase, a step-up transformer is required. For refrigerated containers, the optional 220V single-phase kit is the alternative. Every unit includes electrical protection and automatic restart.
Permits. Usually far less than for a built walk-in. Temporary use on private property often needs little or none; for permanent installations or public property, rules vary by city and county, so check with your local authority.
Placement. Both reefer containers and ZSTORE XL run outdoors or inside an existing building, at floor level or at dock height. That is how distributors add cooler or freezer space to a dry warehouse without building a cold room.
How to size your walk-in cooler
Start with pallet positions, then add room to work. As a guide:
- 10' reefer: 4 pallets, for small volumes, events or backup.
- 20' reefer: 9 pallets, when space on site is tight.
- 40' reefer: 20 pallets, our most popular size, twice the space of a 20' for about the same energy consumption.
- 53' reefer: 30 pallets in a single unit.
- ZSTORE XL: about 20 pallets and 320 ft² per module, from 2 modules (40 pallets) up.
If your team picks orders inside the cooler, size for the aisle as well as the racks. That is often the point where one open modular room beats several single units.
Rent or buy?
Both are available for every model. Rent when the need is seasonal, when you are testing a new product line, or when you want to keep capital free; seasonal contracts of 3 to 12 months come with a discount. Buy when the need is permanent and you want the asset. Many customers start with a rental and buy the unit later, once the program has proved itself. Every unit comes with a 5-year warranty and ZTrack remote monitoring, installed on every unit and running on a subscription.
What affects the cost
We do not publish prices because the right setup varies a lot from one site to the next. The main factors are:
- Size: a single reefer container costs far less than a multi-module cold room.
- Temperature: cooler, freezer, or both with separate zones.
- Term: monthly rental, seasonal contract or purchase.
- Delivery location and site work: distance, access and the electrical connection.
- Options: single-phase kit, humidifier, racking.

Real examples
A Burbank supermarket surrounded by homes added a 480 ft² modular walk-in cooler on single-phase power, with an acoustic box so it runs quietly day and night. A gummy manufacturer in La Mirada rents two 40' reefers fitted with ZGROUP's humidifier system, controlling both temperature and humidity batch after batch.

Frequently asked questions
Is a reefer container the same as a walk-in cooler?
A reefer container is a type of walk-in cooler: a refrigerated room you can walk into, delivered finished instead of built on site. It holds -40°F to +104°F, so it can also work as a walk-in freezer.
How many pallets fit in a reefer container?
4 pallets in a 10', 9 in a 20', 20 in a 40' (our most popular size) and 30 in a 53'. For more, ZSTORE XL adds about 20 pallets and 320 ft² per module.
Can a reefer container run on single-phase power?
The standard is 440–480V three-phase, but refrigerated containers accept an optional 220V single-phase converter kit. With 220V three-phase, a step-up transformer is required.
Can I put a walk-in cooler container inside my warehouse?
Yes. Reefer containers and ZSTORE XL run outdoors or inside an existing building, at floor level or at dock height.
How fast can a reefer walk-in be running?
A reefer container can be running in weeks: it arrives finished and you plug it in. A ZSTORE XL modular walk-in is delivered in under 60 days and installed in 2–5 days. We confirm availability and timing in your quote.
