A fresh produce importer in Swedesboro, NJ was launching a new avocado pre-conditioning program. It wanted to start without a big investment and keep its options open. A ripening room rental gave it both: two 20-pallet ZGROUP ripening units, plugged into the dock with ethylene, water and power, and running fast.

The challenge

A new program comes with open questions. How much volume will it carry? Will it grow, change shape, or move to another site? Committing to permanent ripening rooms before those answers are known ties up capital in a building that may not fit the program a year later.

The importer wanted to get the program running first and decide on the long-term setup later, based on real volume rather than forecasts.

It also needed the ripening capacity to fit into its existing operation: at the dock, where pallets already move.

The solution

ZGROUP supplied two ripening units on a rental basis, each holding 20 pallets. The units are connected to the dock and hooked up to ethylene, water and power, so fruit goes from the dock straight into ripening.

The setup is plug and play. There is no construction project to manage and no permanent structure to build. Once the connections are made, the team loads fruit and ripens.

Because the units are rented and modular, the importer keeps its options open. If the program grows, more capacity can be added. If it changes, the units can be moved and reinstalled at another site.

The results

  • 40 pallets of ripening capacity (2 × 20-pallet units)
  • Dock-connected with ethylene, water and power
  • Plug and play: connect and ripen

The importer launched its avocado pre-conditioning program without a large upfront investment, and it can decide on the long-term setup once the program has proven itself.

Ripening room rental vs. buying: how to decide

ZGROUP ripening rooms are available to rent or to buy. The right choice depends less on the equipment and more on where your program stands.

  • Rent when the program is new. A ripening room rental lets you start without a big capital commitment and learn your real volume before you invest.
  • Rent when demand is seasonal or uncertain. You pay for capacity while you use it, and you keep the flexibility to change the setup.
  • Buy when the program is proven. For a long-term, steady program, owning the units makes sense. ZGROUP equipment comes with a 5-year warranty.

Either way, the installation is the same. There are no civil works and site prep is minimal. Units are delivered in under 60 days and installed in 2 to 5 days, and they can be moved and reinstalled at another site later.

What to have ready before you call: the number of pallets you expect to ripen, where the units would sit relative to your dock, and the power available on site. That is enough to size a first setup.

One more point in favor of starting with a rental: it keeps the decision reversible. If the program outgrows two units, more can be added at the dock. If it settles into a steady, long-term volume, buying becomes the natural next step. And if the program moves, the units can move with it.

What is a ripening room?

A ripening room controls temperature, humidity and ethylene to bring climacteric fruit such as avocados, bananas and mangoes to an even, predictable ripeness. One unit runs the whole cycle: it brings the load to an even pulp temperature, triggers ripening with dosed ethylene, then lowers the temperature to hold the fruit until it ships. Avocados take 3 to 5 days, bananas 4 to 6 and mangoes 3 to 4.

ZGROUP builds ripening rooms in 20' and 40' containers that connect at the dock. See the mobile ripening room, all ripening rooms, and our projects in New York and New Jersey.

Is it right for your operation?

If you are starting a ripening program and want to prove it before you build, renting is a low-risk way in. See how our Ripening room works, or talk to our team about rental options for your site.

Frequently asked questions

Can you rent a ripening room?

Yes. ZGROUP ripening rooms are available to rent or to buy. Renting lets you start a ripening program without a large upfront investment.

What does a rented ripening room need on site?

It connects at your dock and needs power, plus ethylene and water hookups for ripening. There are no civil works and site prep is minimal.

How fast can a ripening room rental be up and running?

ZGROUP units are delivered in under 60 days and installed in 2 to 5 days. Because they are plug and play, ripening can start once they are connected.

How long does it take to ripen avocados in a ripening room?

Usually 3 to 5 days, depending on the fruit and the target stage. Bananas take 4 to 6 days and mangoes 3 to 4.
